It is an image of health, an exaltation of maturity, an idealization of togetherness. With what tactRenoirhas placed the man - his young brother Edmond – in the background, covered half his face, and subdued the detail with which he is rendered! The woman is offered for full and rapturous gaze; her face and body and costume are more flowerlike than the blossom in her hair and corsage. Everything in the picture is developed for visual pleasure, largely through pairing. There are twin touches of colour-gold, pink, black: her gloved hands; the blossom and hand at the top; the pinks of face and flower.
